Where is Kalk Bay?
Kalk Bay is a fishing village on the False Bay coast, located 30.7 km from Cape Town, South Africa (around a 35-minute drive). It’s nestled between the mountains and the sea, along the scenic coastal road to Simon’s Town.

How to Get to Kalk Bay
By Train: You can reach Kalk Bay by taking the Southern Line and alighting at Kalk Bay Station. From there, it’s a short 5-minute walk to the harbour and the main strip of shops and restaurants along Main Road.
By Taxi: The base fare for a taxi is R20, with an additional charge of around R10 per km. You can ask to be dropped off near Kalk Bay Harbour.
By Car: There’s parking available at Kalk Bay Harbour and along Main Road, but spaces fill up quickly on weekends.

I’ve spent quite a few afternoons at the harbour, and it’s always a lively spot with its busy pier and the iconic red-and-white-striped lighthouse at the end. It’s a great place for an evening walk, especially at sunset when the light hits just right for photos.
In winter, though, the harbour changes completely. I’ve stood by the jetty and watched massive waves crash against it and the lighthouse. It’s a powerful reminder of why they call it the “Cape of Storms.”

Kalk Bay Harbour has become a vibrant fishing port since the end of whaling, with fishermen unloading their catches from colourful boats. I’ve spent time there observing this lively scene and buying fresh fish directly from the dock.
I’ve cooked the fish over the coals, and it made for a tasty and healthy meal. The freshness of the fish is evident, and it’s a genuine local experience you shouldn’t miss.

During my visit to the harbour, I noticed that while fishermen and tourists are common sights, it’s the seals that truly make the pier lively. These playful animals are everywhere, and watching them up close is a highlight.
One seal that caught my eye was Sailor, a large fellow who enjoys basking in the sun, making contented noises, and sometimes swiping at a fisherman’s catch when he’s not paying attention.

Dalebrook Tidal Pool, situated between St James and Kalk Bay, is a charming spot that often gets overlooked. You can access it by walking through the subway under the railway line.
I enjoyed how the pool blends into the ocean with its low wall. It’s best to go early in the morning to catch the sunlight before the mountains cast a shadow, and the large boulders are great for lounging while you keep an eye out for whales.

I often take a break at this sea-facing park during or after a day out. The kids love running around on the grass and playing on the swings and roundabouts.
When I feel peckish, I pop across the road to Bob’s Bagel for a tasty but slightly pricey freshly made bagel and a good coffee.

The Kalk Bay Theatre is a charming venue built by hand and protected as a heritage site. It accommodates up to 72 guests and offers a supper club experience alongside theatre and comedy performances.
When I visited, I enjoyed the intimate atmosphere and the community feel of the place. The performances were engaging, and the supper club option added a nice touch to the evening.

You might be surprised to learn that Kalk Bay has some fantastic caves and hiking trails, suitable for all skill levels. One standout is Boomslang Cave, which I’ve explored myself and found to be a local favourite.
The cave is ideal for beginners and families looking for a bit of adventure. Inside, you’ll need to crawl through some tight spaces, but it opens up to stunning views over Noordhoek Valley and False Bay.
Go surfing at the Kalk Bay Reef

Kalk Bay Reef offers consistent left-breaking waves and occasional barrels, making it a notable spot along the False Bay Coastline. The exposed reef can be tricky, so it’s best suited for more experienced surfers.
I’ve surfed here and found the warmer Indian Ocean a real bonus, allowing for longer sessions in the water. Just be cautious of the reef’s unpredictable conditions and enjoy the ride.

I tried the kingklip, which was served with a light lemon butter sauce. The fish was fresh and tender, and the zesty sauce added just the right amount of citrus to complement the dish.

The Brass Bell is a cosy seaside pub right on the edge of the tidal pools, making it a go-to spot for its ocean views and live music. I’ve always loved the laid-back vibe and being able to watch the waves while enjoying a cocktail.
Their seafood platter stands out for me, especially the fresh prawns and tender calamari, which have a slight sweetness from the ocean. Pairing it with a cold drink by the water just adds to the experience.

I tried the beef burger with bacon, brie, and caramelised onion, and the combination worked well. The rich brie and sweet onion balanced each other nicely, while the crispy bacon added a savoury crunch.

Salt stands out with its global mix of flavours and a focus on fresh, organic ingredients. Run by 24-year-old Nic Macleod, it’s a great spot for a relaxed meal, whether you’re grabbing a seat at the counter or enjoying a table inside.
I tried the ceviche with lemon, grapefruit, and honey, which offered a refreshing blend of citrus and sweetness. The bratwurst roti with homemade kimchi had a satisfying balance of spicy and tangy, making it a memorable choice.

Satori, a quaint Italian spot, quickly became one of my favourites for its thin-crust pizzas and hearty pastas. I’ve enjoyed everything from their pizzas to a delicious whole fish there.
The laid-back vibe is perfect for romantic dinners, family lunches, or a relaxed midweek meal. While waiting for your food, you can challenge your table mates to one of the board games they provide.

Ice Café is a local favourite for homemade ice cream made from a secret family recipe with natural ingredients—no eggs or gelatine. I’ve enjoyed flavours like Black Forest, with real cherries and chocolate cake, as well as peanut butter and coconut.
The ice cream, served in generous scoops in a sugar cone or cup, is perfect for a seaside stroll. I appreciate their daily flavour changes and their commitment to the environment, like encouraging the return of plastic spoons and using paper tubs.

I recently visited Kalk Bay Garden Shop, a charming seaside nursery right next to the Kalk Bay train tracks. They have a lovely range of potted plants, herbs, and colourful flowers, as well as hanging plants and garden accessories.
