The Top Car Insurance Companies in Johannesburg That’ll Save You and Your Finances When You Need It

Coverage options - We picked insurance providers that offer plans with comprehensive coverage, including liability coverage, collision coverage, and medical coverage. Claims process - We checked whether these insurance companies have hassle-free and straightforward claims processes. Customer support - We also looked at whether they have support teams that can respond to emergencies 24/7 and whether they respond quickly to enquiries made over the phone or through email. Price fairness - We considered whether their prices are fair given the inclusions of their plans and the efficiency of their claims processes.

Being involved in a car accident is one of the most scary experiences we can encounter. Much more so when we start to wonder about the jaw-dropping repair and hospital bills that come with it!

That’s why I’ve decided to get car insurance after I was rear-ended a couple of months ago. Just the thought of never having to worry about sudden expenses took a huge load off my shoulders.

Of course, not every insurance company out there deserves your hard-earned money. Let’s make sure you get instead one of these reliable car insurance companies in Johannesburg!

U Covered Insurance Solutions aims to stand out from its competition by offering something new. They have three types of car insurance: Classic, Essential, and Purple.

As most of us expect, the Classic Plan is their basic offering, which provides protection against most risks like accidents, theft, or vandalism.

Meanwhile, Essential is similar to Classic, except that it also provides coverage for your home.

As for their Purple Plan, it’s their most comprehensive plan providing coverage of up to 5 million rand. It even provides you with your own Discovery Insure Service Executive who will always be ready to answer your queries (pretty cool!).

Moreover, all these plans provide access to their Vitality Drive, a programme that incorporates modern tech like automated emergency calls if it detects an accident.

Of course, all these features don’t come cheap.

Pros

  • Has an insurance coverage that includes both cars and homes
  • Can provide coverage of up to 5 million rand
  • Dedicated Discovery Insure Service Executive for Purple Plan holders
  • Has the Vitality Drive programme which offers state-of-the-art safety features like automated emergency calls

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Sometimes raises premiums even without prior claims

iWYZE, a subsidiary of Old Mutual, is a good choice if you’re looking for cheap car insurance that doesn’t skimp on coverage.

I say that because they are known for their affordable insurance policy called DriveWYZE Lite. Available to fully paid cars, this policy has up to R20,000 coverage for accidents and damages plus R1,000,000 coverage for third-party liability. It costs half the price of traditional car insurance, which is quite good!

In case you’re still paying for your car, iWYZE still has the usual insurance option available. However, they made sure to add a couple of perks to sweeten this one, like 24/7 roadside assistance and hotel expense subsidies if your car needs a day’s worth of repairs.

Still, they’ve got some kinks to work out, like their poor customer support, which sometimes forgets to respond to calls and emails.

Pros

  • Has the DriveWYZE Lite, a cheaper car insurance plan for fully-paid cars
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Coverage for tyres and minor damages

Cons

  • Sometimes forgets to respond to calls and emails
  • Some rude staff

If you’re someone like me who’s not a big fan of insurance add-ons, you might want to check out dotsure.co.za, a George-based insurance company founded in 2011.

What makes them different is that they allow clients to disable any add-ons they don’t want, like windscreen coverage, weekend coverage, and night driving coverage. Of course, every option you disable reduces the price of your insurance premiums.

Once you’ve disabled the add-ons, you’re still left with a good range of benefits that’ll pay for any damages or hospitalisations incurred from things like potholes and car accidents.

Another thing I love about them is their speedy claim submission system. My friend had to use it once, and he told me it only took him a minute to fill out the form online.

Sadly, the same couldn’t be said when it came to processing the claim itself.

Pros

  • Allows clients to remove insurance add-ons
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Automated licence renewal notifications
  • Speedy claim submission system

Cons

  • Processing of claims sometimes takes weeks
  • Strict coverage limits
  • May not acknowledge claims with very high mileage

Probably the best service i’ve received

“Friendly, fast concise information, knows her product well.

Dotsure, like all insurance companies, will be judged on payouts. But initial contact is probably the best service I’ve received from insurance companies.”

Santam Insurance, founded in 1918, is one of South Africa’s oldest and largest insurance companies. With that long of a presence in the industry, they’d become a trusted name when it comes to non-life insurance products.

One of those is their car insurance, which I’m a big fan of thanks to its SmartPark feature. Simply put, this feature will grant you an automatic 20% discount on your premiums if you drive less than 15,000 kilometres every year.

Aside from that, they also offer a couple of neat perks, like 24/7 roadside assistance. They even have home-drive assistance, which will send a driver to you if you have had too many drinks to drive safely.

Sadly, most of these perks are offered only if you opt for comprehensive coverage, which costs slightly more.

Pros

  • 20% discount if you drive less than 15,000 km every year
  • 24/7 roadside assistance and home drive assistance
  • Covers vintage cars

Cons

  • Most perks they offer can only be availed by becoming a comprehensive coverage client
  • Basic plan has very limited coverage for rim damage and emergency expenses for passengers

PPS for Professionals is an insurance company in Parktown that was founded in 1941. Initially founded to cater to graduate professionals, they now offer their services to everyone in South Africa.

What I believe makes their car insurance stand out from the rest is that it has a profit-sharing programme. Here, you can continuously earn a share of their profits throughout the years and claim it as soon as you reach the age of 55.

Sounds neat, right? Think of it as an addition to your retirement portfolio.

Furthermore, their car insurance also has some amazing perks, like roadside assistance and full coverage for damages incurred on luxury cars.

However, please take note that their profit-sharing programme has limited slots, and they’ll first have to check whether you’re eligible. Some clients told me that they had to wait weeks before their claims were approved.

Pros

  • Profit sharing programme for car insurance clients
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Provides full coverage for luxury cars

Cons

  • Profit sharing programme has limited slots
  • May take weeks before they can approve claims

Best insurance options for graduate professionals

“Best insurance options for graduate professionals. Life, provident and pension funds, short term and investment options all linked in a mutual fund structure. The PPS have regular events for members in its own events facilities”
